Aggies ace, injure at ITA’s

MARYVILLE, Missouri (September 28) – The Cameron men’s tennis team had its outstanding weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships marred by injury today, mere sets away from both the doubles and singles championship titles. CU once again established itself as the best team in the entire region, but a leg injury to top player Daniel Pazos left the Aggies heading home without hardware. The tournament was hosted by Northwest Missouri State University.

With one day left in the three-day tournament, the Aggies are still on track to bring home both the single and doubles titles.

CU gets above .500 with sweep

MONTICELLO, Arkansas (September 27) – Cameron’s volleyball team (8-7, 1-2 LSC) got back above the .500 mark today with a sweep of their two matches at the University of Arkansas-Monticello Invitational. CU started the day with a 3-1 victory over Southern Arkansas and finished it with a 3-2 win over the host Cotton Blossoms of Arkansas-Monticello. This was the final regular season tournament for the Aggies this season.

CU battles, loses to #23 MSU

LAWTON, Oklahoma (September 25) – The Cameron Aggie volleyball team (6-7, 1-2 LSC) gave the nationally-ranked #23 Midwestern State Mustangs (17-0, 3-0 LSC) all they wanted and more tonight in a very loud Aggie Gym. CU came up just short tonight as they fell 3-1 to the undefeated Mustangs in the annual Red River Rumble. Tonight’s four-set match was scored 25-20, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18 and lasted a little under two hours.

Cameron University launches theatre season with “The Shape of Things”

Cameron University’s theatre season, “A Celebration of the Cameron University Centennial,” gets underway with “The Shape of Things,” a contemporary black comedy about the nature of art and human manipulation. This thought-provoking work from playwright and filmmaker Neil LaBute, runs from September 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. and on September 28 at 2 p.m. at University Theatre.

CU takes UCO to wire, loses 3-2

LAWTON, Oklahoma (September 20) – The Cameron Aggie volleyball team (6-6, 1-1 LSC) was unable to make it back-to-back home victories this afternoon after falling to the archrival Bronchos of the University of Central Oklahoma (5-10, 1-1 LSC), 3-2. CU held a 2-1 set lead, but was unable to put the strong UCO squad away. The Aggies have now lost the last three matches and six out of the last seven matches versus the Bronchos.

Aggies sweep in home opener

LAWTON, Oklahoma (September 18) – The Cameron Aggie volleyball team (6-5) kicked off their home season in perfect fashion tonight with a 3-0 sweep of the Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs (5-8) in front of a fantastic Aggie crowd. Tonight’s match was scored 25-18, 25-20, 25-15, and was the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. CU has now won two matches in a row.

Solid 2nd place finish for CU

ABILENE, Texas (September 16) – The Cameron men’s golf team got their 2008-2009 season off on the right foot this week with a 2nd place finish at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate golf tournament in Abilene, Texas. The event featured 15 elite teams and was played at the Diamondback Golf Club. CU’s total team score in the event was an impressive 569 (286-283).

TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma (September 16) – Nearly halfway through with their fall season, the Cameron’s women’s golf team wrapped up play today at the Northeastern State University Women’s Golf Classic at the Cherry Springs Golf Club. CU finished the event in 6th place out of 13 total schools with a two-round team score of 654 (333-321). The Aggies remained in 6th place throughout the tournament.

Gowan named Cameron University Director of Community Relations

Jana Gowan has been named Director of Community Relations at Cameron University. Gowan, a native of Lawton, was formerly Staff Researcher and Writer at the university, a post she has held since May 2006. In her new position, she is responsible for all public relations and marketing functions of the university, including development and production of publications, ad placement, assistance in coordinating university events, overseeing distribution of information to the media and responding to media requests, and other duties as requested by university officials.

ADA, Oklahoma (September 13) – The regionally-ranked No. 8 Aggie cross country team was unable to make it two consecutive meet victories today at the Tiger Chase hosted by East Central University. Cameron came in second place in the five-team meet, but had a great chance to take the title. If it weren’t for a few mishaps, CU would have won back-to-back meets for the first time in school history.

CU goes 1-1 ahead of Ike

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (September 12) – Playing a day ahead of schedule, the Aggie volleyball team (5-5) got back to .500 today after beating Incarnate Word 3-1 at the Texas MedClinic Regional Crossover volleyball tournament hosted by St. Mary's University. Cameron lost their opening match on Thursday by the heartbreaking score of 3-2 for their third straight loss. The tournament schedule was altered due to Hurricane Ike's projected path towards San Antonio, Texas, where the tournament is being held.

Constitution Day with discussion of Native American perspectives

Cameron University joins colleges and universities across the nation to celebrate Constitution Day on Wednesday, September 17, commemorating the 1787 signing of the Constitution of the United States of America. Sponsored by the School of Liberal Arts, the Department of History and Government, and the Lawton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, CU will mark Constitution Day with a keynote address and panel discussion of the Native American perspective on the United States Constitution. The event, which takes place in CU’s Shepler Ballroom from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m., is part of the university’s continuing Centennial Celebration and also serves as the first meeting of the Cameron University Centennial Political Science Forum. Copies of the U.S. Constitution and commemorative bookmarks will be distributed. This event is free and is open to the public.

OKLAHOMA ROCK SONG FINALISTS NAMED

Votes for the song to be named the Official Oklahoma Rock Song will be taken through November 15, 2008. The winning song will be announced during the next legislative session. Initial voting for the songs began in April with nominations being made on a special internet site. A total of 458 songs received 2,498 nominations on the web site.

Fall Encampment to be held at the Museum of the Great Plains

The 1840s Southern Plains Trading Station will “open for business” September 29 through October 4 at the Museum of the Great Plains. With support from the City of Lawton, Lawton Arts & Humanities Council, the Oklahoma Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Museum’s 1840s trade station program, known as the Fall Encampment, includes three additional weekdays and more reenactors to accommodate all who wish to come.

Lawton’s International Festival Poster Contest Winners Announced

The International Festival Committee, a subcommittee of the Lawton Arts and Humanities Council has selected the winners for this year’s competition from over forty entries. The over all winning concept was created by Sherena Swatsky in the 9-12th grade category. The design is a pinwheel with many different flags on it. The colorful logo will be used on the International Festival Poster, Festival Brochure, and T-Shirts.

Cameron women take 8th at Drury

BRANSON, Missouri (September 9) – The Cameron Aggie women’s golf team kicked off their 2008-2009 season this week at the Drury University Fall Shootout women’s golf tournament in Branson, Missouri. The squad is only the third of CU’s eleven intercollegiate athletic programs to begin their 2008-2009 season thus far. At the event the Aggie women took 8th place out of the 21 elite teams in competition. CU’s combined team score was 658 (331-327).

DENTON, Texas (September 6) – Competing in the second of four scheduled tournaments this season, the Cameron Aggie volleyball team (4-4) today wrapped up play at the Texas Woman’s University Classic volleyball tournament in Denton, Texas. The Aggies went 2-2 at the event and are now 4-4 on the season. CU’s two wins came against Ouachita Baptist and Texas Wesleyan.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (September 6) – It was a historic day south of the Red River for the Aggie Cross Country team, who today won the first meet in Cameron University school history. In the program’s four years, CU had never won an event and had never finished ahead of the daunting East Central University Tigers. At today’s Midwestern State University Mustang Relays in Wichita Falls, Texas, the Aggies were crowned champions and started the 2008-2009 season perfectly.

Svajlen takes 15th at WUC

SUN CITY, South Africa (September 5) – Thousands of miles away and seven hours ahead of Lawton, Cameron Aggie senior golfer Peter Svajlen competed against the top collegiate golfers in the entire world this week. At the 12th Annual World University Golf Championship in Sun City, South Africa, Svajlen took on the best golfers the collegiate golf world had to offer and finished in 15th place overall. The four-round event was played at the Gary Player Golf Course in Sun City, and lasted from Tuesday until today.

 We've all heard the old adage "a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing." A perfect example -- the free online home valuation sites that I've checked out over the years. 

I've found them to be so general that they are pretty useless. Certainly nothing any decent appraiser would put in a report. Most real estate professionals seem to be of the opinion that the values homeowners using those sites come up with are unreliable.
