Ags go 1-1 vs. ECU; Williams, Reid hit double-doubles

ADA, Oklahoma (January 20) – The Cameron Aggie basketball teams braved the weather and made the trip to Ada this afternoon to take on the East Central University Tigers. While only one CU team was able to get back on the winning track, both teams played very well in close contests. The Cameron women’s team fell to the Tigers, 75-67, while the men came away victorious, 71-66.

The Aggie women (2-14, 0-2 LSC) finished with a disappointing loss, their second in a row, but were able to fight back from a 17 point deficit late in the second half. The Aggies are still looking for their first conference win of the season, while ECU (9-7, 2-0 LSC) is undefeated in LSC play. Free throws proved to be a major factor in the game, as Cameron was outscored from the charity stripe, 16 for 20, compared to ECU’s 25 for 34.

“We weren’t able to get to the free throw line,” Head Coach Kevin Hackerott said. “It was one of those close games that was hard to overcome. Even when we started making shots we couldn’t seem to get things to go our way. We had the chance and couldn’t make the play, but sometimes it goes like that on the road.”

Junior guard Tiffany Williams had another outstanding game, finishing with yet another double-double. Her final totals were 25 points on a solid 10 for 16 from the floor, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals in 33 minutes of play. She was one of just two Aggies to finish with double-digit scoring.

Senior forward Chelsea Turner also had a great game, fresh off of her own double-double performance last Wednesday against Southeastern. Turner finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, and a team-high 3 steals.

“Tiffany and Chelsea were definitely bright spots for us. Both played very, very well, we just need a couple more girls to step up,” Coach Hackerott said. “This was a game you walk away from feeling like you should have won, and in this conference when you have the chance to win a game you need to win it. It’s very disappointing to not come out on top, but now we need to go back to work Monday and get ready for Northeastern State.”

The CU men’s team (10-6, 1-1 LSC) was able to right the ship against ECU, ending their losing streak and hopefully beginning another winning one. The Tigers (8-8, 0-2 LSC) shot 41 free throw attempts, but were not able to record their first conference win of the season.

“I am very happy we won,” Head Coach Maury Leitzke said. “This was the best we have played in 2007, and was the best job we have done at blocking out which was the main reason we won. We won this game as a team, and it’s the first time we have done that in 2007. Everyone played their parts and everyone did their job.”

The Aggies went into halftime with a 4 point lead, which they would relinquish for the majority of the second half. After falling behind early in the second half, the Aggies played catch up until taking the lead on a two-pointer by senior guard Matt Reid with under four minutes to go.

Reid finished with great game overall, joining CU’s Tiffany Williams in recording a double-double versus ECU. Reid totaled a team-high in both points (24) and rebounds (12), as well as 2 assists in 31 minutes of play. He went 9 for 14 from the field.

Junior forward Leboise Gladden had arguably his “breakout” game of the season after having joined the team just five games ago. Gladden finished with 16 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

“Matt had a great game,” Coach Leitzke said. “Leboise had a huge game for us; he hit some really big shots down the stretch. There’s no time to celebrate though; we need to turn around and get ready for Northeastern.”

Junior guard Joseph Bolden did a great job of running the Aggie offense, pouring in 20 points in a team-high 38 minutes. He also had 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and a team-high 6 assists.

Both Aggie squads travel to Tahlequah this Wednesday to take on Northeastern State University in their third conference game of the season. The women tip off at 6:00pm, with the men beginning at 8:00pm. Cameron returns home next weekend to take on the Bronchos of Central Oklahoma in an afternoon double-header.
