I need your help !

Hi, my name is Angel and I currently live in Georgia. My husband is military and has been put on assignment @ Ft Sill. I have never been to Oklahoma in my life so I have no clue what to expect. I have so many questions !

First and foremost, I need to find a house to rent (at least 3 bedrooms--**3 children) and find a job ! I am a banker (bookkeeping, proof & teller experience) and have been at it for 11 years now so I really have no experience with any other type of work. I like working @ small community banks. Any suggestions?

Secondly, I want to find out as much as I can about Lawton. What are the schools like (elementary) ? Whats the weather like year round? What kind of family-friendly activities are there? What areas of the city should I avoid (if any) when looking for housing? How much do car tags cost? ***note: I ask this because Georgia's ad valorum tax is RIDICULOUSLY HIGH. My husbands car is an 06 Pontiac GTO and his tag cost $382 last year. I just bought an 08 Toyota Tundra and I am terrified to see THAT tag bill !!

Tell me anything you think I should know before moving there. Anything you want. Doesnt matter if I asked about it or not because I am sure I have overlooked questions here !!

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration

Hello Angel-

Welcome to Lawton! I hope you enjoy Oklahoma. When looking for houses, avoid Lawton View and surrounding areas, and Lawton Heights. These are the main areas to avoid(ghetto!), but there are many nice areas in Lawton. What is your price range? And will you be here when you find your house? If not, post the address and one of us will let you know if the area is good or not. With Lawton, you can be in a nice area, drive 3 or 4 blocks, and be in a bad area. It really just depends.

There are plenty of banks here, and new ones are being built, so finding a job should be no problem. I bank at Arvest, and I really like them. I'm afraid I can't tell you how much tags are or what the elementary schools are like. For things to do, check out our calender of events. Lawton is not exactly 'hopping', but there are a lot of fun things to do. There's a mall, movies, bowling, plays, an art gallery, a museum, and a very nice wildlife refuge not far away. Including the base, it's a town of about 100,000.

Oklahoma is different. If I recall, Georgia was humid, lush, and green. Oklahoma is humid. Very flat, lots of prairie in this area- though there are prettier areas in Oklahoma. Lawton may not be prettiest town you'll see, but the people are fantastic for the most part, and there are a lot of new beautification projects going. Lawton is about an hour from Oklahoma City, which is a very nice little city. Great shopping and tons to do! There is a very cool area in the city called Bricktown, which you really must go see. There is also a nice zoo, and a science center called the Omniplex that your kids will love. The Omniplex has educational, hands-on exhibits that demonstrate scientific principles, as well as the biggest indoor treehouse I've ever seen.  I hope this has been helpful! For more information, feel free to peruse our site and post any further questions in the forum.
