Over the last few years there has been a tremendous surge in the amount of reality shows appearing on tv.  I for one have never understood the fascination with any of these shows.  I believe they serve no purpose other than allowing us to indulge in entertainment that doesn't require us to think.  That is not to say that I haven't stopped to watch an episode or two of some shows.  It is just after I watch more than ten minutes I feel robbed of my senses.  The mindless fluff that some of these shows spew over the airwaves astonishes me.  For example,  I read in the news that David Hasselhoff, a judge on the tv show "Americas Got Talent", through a fit because he had a disagreement over a perfromer (who is a male impersonator of singer shakira).  The man stormed off stage.  Now you may think that I hate reality TV. I don't hate these shows.  I just think that the quantity has become so ridiculus and the quality has taken a sever drop.  The reality show "The Real World"  was really good when it first started.  It reached its peak in the mid 90'.  The fact that it was not very scripted was the primary redeeming quality it had and the candid cast that appeared on the show were truly sharing their lives.  Now the show is completely bancrupt of any redeeming quality and it seems to be primarily focused on sex and which cast member will have a nervous breakdown and flip out on camera.  There is almost no intimate look at the mental and emotional development of these people having to live with each other for six months.  Anyway that is just my rant for the day.

I could not agree more.   However, here are a couple of more reasons to hate reality shows.

  1. They make every activity so cut throat.  Even baking a cupcake becomes an a competition in which the losers are humiliated beyound recognition.
  2. They both trivialize and dramatize all in 30 to 60 minutes (or 15 to 40 minutes if you take out time for commercials) activities thay should be taken more seriously.  Dating reality shows take the cake (cupcake if you prefer) on this.  Choosing  a mate should not happen on prime time.  I stopped counting how many of these have been shown but I am sure it must be in the millions by now.
