Raise your hand if you've had your house or car burgled. That's what I thought. Most of us. And that fact is why the shooting death of teen burglar Freddie Stuever resonates so deeply among Lawtonians. At first glance the shooting seemed like it might tread the boundary of an actionable offense. That was only at first glance.

When Jeff Dorrell confronted a burglar carrying out a gun case from Dorrell's parent's home on NW 70th, what happened next was the culmination of too many burglaries, often fueled by the burglar's obsession with meth. Stuever forced his way past Dorrell out of the house but was ultimately forced to the ground by Dorrell's .45. There he waited somewhat patiently before making his move. Dorrell said Stuever rushed him. Dorrell, perhaps fearing Stuever was trying to take Dorrell's gun, an attempt that could stir memories of Ricky Ray Malone's murder of Trooper Nik Green. Stuever was shot five times, then made a final fatal charge and was shot once in the chest. In the aftermath Dorrell can be heard almost hyperventilating on the 911 tape. According to DA Robert Schulte, Dorrell's story checks out. The gun blast to the chest is proof the Stuever was running toward Dorrell and not away. Oklahoma's "Stand Your Ground" law merely codifies what every Oklahoman knows. If you break into a house, you take your chances, and though most feel some ambiguous emotions (The death of a teen is sad -- But he had it coming) in the end no 12 Lawtonians would fault a homeowner making sure this burglar didn't get away.

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

wild west lawton is right, but we are not in the wild west anymore. this is now a civilized nation, and it is time we start living that way, meaning let the jurisdiction process do it's job. there is no reason this boy should have been shot when he was outside of the house. i am not condoning what he did, but mr. dorrell was not in harms way when mr. stuever was trying to run off. the 911 dispatcher already had a complete description of the boy and police were on the way. if mr. dorrell would have let him run, which is what he was trying to do when he was shot the first FIVE times, the police would have quickly caught up with him. it would have been a different story if he was in the house or initially coming after him. he did not become violent until after he had been shot five times. i do not believe mr. stuever was right in any way, but i also do not believe in taking the law into your own hands unless it is 110% necessary, which this was not. this "stand your ground" law needs to be modified into the twenty-first century.

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

I feel so sad reading the ending of "wild wild West", he did NOT have it coming. Human life should be valued way over a stupid piece of property. What happened was Mr Dorrell took the law into his own hands. He could have stayed put, followed the kid, got his truck tag number but no, he felt really brave with his gun in his hand and got trigger happy. I can't believe they approved the "stand your ground law" the way they did. Back in the wild wild west days it was ok to shoot a man stealing your horse, back then you needed that horse in order to survive the wild west. But shooting a teenager leaving a house doesn't make sense. Something smells fishy here!

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

AND YOU KNOW WHAT ELSE IS FISHY....HOW COULD THIS D.A. RULE THIS CASE OPEN AND SHUT WITHIN TWO HOURS OF THE SHOOTING HAPPENING AND SAY IT WAS JUSTIFIED SELF DEFENSE...I KNOW IT TAKES A DAY OR TWO FOR THE CORONERS REPORT FROM THE CITY....AND WHY DID DORRELL HAVE A LAWYER (ESPECIALLY JOHN ZELPST, WHO IS A CRIMINAL DEFENSE LAWYER) WITHIN MINUTES OF THE SHOOTING HAPPENING....I THINK THIS IS A CASE OF THE GOOD OL BOYS CLUB AND THINGS ARE GETTING SWEPT UNDER THE RUG....I AM NOT IN ANY WAY SAYING WHAT THIS CHILD DID WAS RIGHT....BUT JUSTICE NEEDS TO BE SERVED IF DORRELL WAS IN THE WRONG....-RLS-

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

I had the chance to listen to the audio tape of this incident on the local news and as I see it, it was either the kid or the homeowner. To those who says Dorrell should have retreated, that mindset would have been popular in England but this isn't England, this is Lawton. If someone comes at me in like that, yes I'm going to react whether anyone like it or not. If anyone doesn't like it that's too bad. 911 doesn't always work. This retreating business don't work too well. To those who think otherwise I sure hope you don't end up being elected to any kind of public office or having the ability to set or influence public policy over the rest of us becuase otherwise there's no hope whasoever for this nation.

I was wondering why my comment did not get printed on the 1/07?
I was just wondering why you don't print all comments! Before you write You need to do some investgating yourself!!! Have you seen the coroner's report?? After the first shot he wasn't able to attack anyone! Have you spoke to the previous person who was shot five times and still lives today and carrying Dorrells bullets in him? Have you spoke to the first victim he killed??? Oh yeah, that's right, he's dead!!! He can't speak. You probably won't print my second comment either. But at least I know the dog knows. How many more victims does Dorrell get to shoot five times? before he is stopped!!!! Hmmmmmmmm, five seems to be his number.

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

You peace-niks so amuse me. No wonder our nation is a mess and crime so high. You're right about one thing "peace", this isn't the wild west........... at least for the law-abiding citizens! But to the bad guys, thieves, robbers, rapers, killers and other assorted of that ilk, it STILL IS the wild wild west! They continue with their badlands way of life, hoping & depending on the peace-niks and hand-wringers like you to make sure they are not punished for their acts against society. The time has come for all good law-abiding citizens to start taking responsibility for their own protection. There is simply no way that the "police" can protect you from anything. As a matter of fact, the courts have ruled that they ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PROTECT YOU"!!!

Let this be a warning and wakeup call to all of you low-life's........ we're armed and we're waiting on you.

Re: Wild wild west Lawton

It seems most of you people are not correctly informed. The first report on the local news (KSWO) was incorrect. Elaina Rusk (a native of California) did the story and did a half cocked Malibu Barbie job on it. Her initial story would account for the views of Dorrels guilt not innocence. She told the viewers the poor kid was shot running away, which is not the case. What did happen is the “poor” kid was being held at gunpoint while Mr. Dorrell called the police. While on the phone to the 911 operator the “poor” kid lunged at Dorrell despite Dorrells verbal warnings not to forcing Dorrel to take him out. Pure adrenalin is what accounts for the 6 shots put into the “poor” kid. I am amazed he had the presents of mind to hold the seventh and final shot. Having a loaded gun pointed at a malicious stranger would make anyone’s adrenalin race, just think back to any time when you have heard something go bump in the night. Did you not get nervous? What Dorrell did was defend the property by holding the robber at gun point while the police were coming, and defend his person from a full grown male aggressor where his life was on the line. As for Dorrell having a good lawyer, if you have never been taught that should ever shoot someone for any reason first call your attorney and let them call the police, then learn that now.

The Gun used by Dorrell was a Springfield 1911 which is an exact copy of the Colt 1911. In the Wild West we have a saying, "God made men, Colt made’m equal." As for Miss Rusk it would seem to be another case of the liberal media twisting the facts to fit their anti-gun agenda. Now that she has spent some time in Oklahoma when she goes back to California the IQ of both states will rise.

Hello, out there!  I'm Bonnie Barker.  You are all probably acquainted with my nephew, Sheridan, otherwise known as the "smartest prairie dog in town".

Being somewhat envious of Sheridan's success, I decided that I should host a blog of my own.  I am interested in all the news that's fit to print and some that isn't. If you don't have anything nice to say, please come down to the prairie dog mounds and let's dish!
