Every Lawtonian should feel a little twinge of satisfaction in seeing the bulldozers dismantle the erstwhile Midtown Square shopping. This building's unburied corpse has been let molder before our eyes because its owner, Bob Mansell, seems to have little regard for anyone aside from himself. In this passion play, lo and behold, the Lawton City Government comes out the hero, engaging in a pitched battle with Mansell for years before, finally, a judge with backbone gives Mansell an ultimatum. Mansell, as he has done throughout this ordeal, did next to nothing. And so down the buildings come. It's going to be strange to see an empty lot there. Mansell still owns the land. I wouldn't put it past him to build the ugliest building possible (perhaps something as ugly as the county courthouse) as the ultimate vulgar gesture to Lawton.

Whatevery happened to Eminent Domain? Maybe we could plant a giant center city park.

That's prime real estate. I would love to see something useful there, maybe as early as next year. It would be a good spot for some tasteful bu low-rent office space.

Once the buildings are down and all the debris hauled away, isn't the property still owned by Mansell? Will he build something there, or perhaps sell the empty lot to a prospective merchant? I've heard where Mansell owns quite a lot of property in Lawton and much of it is dilapidated and totally run down and empty eyesores. What makes him do this and why not spend some money to keep these homes and businesses maintained? Either the guy is mentally unstable or there's a hidden reason to all this going on. Is he part of the old Lawton "good ol' boy network" for the past 30-40 years now? I know, too many questions. Anyway, something to ponder while you clean the dirt from your underhome getaway.
