Aggie men sweep CCCC
LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 16) – The Cameron men’s tennis team (18-3) continued to show why they are ranked #7 in the entire nation this afternoon with a 6-0 sweep of Collin County Community College. The Aggies defeated the Cougars handily, and if the match had not been suspended CU would have likely won 9-0. The Cougars are currently ranked nationally as the #3 team in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
“Our guys played really well and looked very good out on the court,” Head Coach James Helvey said. “We were making smart decisions and just played better than they did.”
Today’s match was originally scheduled to feature the men’s and women’s teams from both schools, but the women’s match was cancelled and will not be made up.
Starting the afternoon was senior Jordi Mullor, the reigning Lone Star Conference Player of the Week, and teammate Daniel Pazos who is a junior at CU. The duo combined to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-2 over Manuel Mendoza Carette and Carlos Viscarra.
CU swept the remaining two doubles matches with senior Nicolas Mascheroni and junior Cristian Easton winning the No. 2 doubles match 8-3, and junior Saman Samii and freshman Jeff Sasser winning the No. 3 doubles match 8-5. CCCC’s No. 2 doubles team was comprised of Dmitry Kaforin and Marius Tangen, while their No. 3 doubles team paired Scott Bradley and Carols Bataller together.
Mullor shut out his opponent in the No. 1 singles match, winning 6-0, 1-0. The match was called in the second set when Mullor’s opponent, Carette, retired due to injury.
Easton nearly recorded the shutout in his match at the No. 3 singles position. He won 6-0, 6-3 over Tangen.
Senior Agustin Criado was the only other Aggie to have his match count towards the overall total. He won the No. 6 singles match 6-4, 6-3 over Danish Ahmad.
“The team played very solidly today,” Coach Helvey said. “I am confident we can keep this momentum going into the postseason.”
Pazos, Samii, and Mascheroni all had their matches suspended in the second set. Each of the three Aggies was ahead in their respective matches. Samii and Mascheroni were a mere two games away from recording the victory, while Pazos needed just three more games.
Today’s match concludes the home portion of the 2007-2008 Aggie tennis schedule. The Cameron women’s team travels to Edmond, Oklahoma, tomorrow afternoon to take on the Central Oklahoma Bronchos at 1:00pm.
Tomorrow’s match is the final regular season contest for either the Aggie men’s or women’s team. Postseason play begins next week at the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament in Abilene, Texas. The event runs from April 24-26.
Regardless of what happens in the LSC tournament, both Aggie squads have qualified for the NCAA Division II Regional and National tournaments.
