Taylor’s clutch play gives CU victory
DENTON, Texas (November 15) – The Tom Webb era of Cameron Aggie women’s basketball began perfectly tonight, thanks in large part to the clutch performance of senior guard Kristi Taylor. Cameron’s lone senior hit not one, not two, but five key baskets to give the Aggies (1-0, 0-0 LSC North) the 77-76 win over the Truman State Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0 MIAA) in double overtime. CU is currently taking part in the Texas Woman’s University Pioneer Premiere tournament in Denton, Texas.
“We are very happy with the win tonight,” Coach Webb said. “The kids played so hard and stayed with it. I’m very proud of the girls.”
The Aggies were down 2 points with a mere 5 seconds left in regulation when they went the length of the court and Taylor was fouled with no time left on the clock. After hitting both free throws to send the game into overtime, the Aggies found themselves in a similar situation as time ran out in the first overtime.
With .4 left on the clock Taylor was fouled again, and again she hit both free throws to extend the game by another five minutes. As the seconds clicked down in the second overtime frame, Taylor managed to hit a running lay-up that fell through the net as the buzzer sounded to give Cameron the victory.
“Kristi did a great job and she stayed with it,” Coach Webb said. “It was nice because she knew that all of her teammates believed in her.”
Taylor finished the game with a game-high 21 points on 7-16 shooting. She also recorded a game-high in both assists (7) and steals (5) to go along with 6 rebounds. Taylor played 41 minutes tonight.
As a team the Aggies shot a solid 33.8% percent from the floor and recorded 37 rebounds. Cameron posted an impressive 19 steals, and 8 different Aggies recorded at least 1 steal in the game.
Junior guard Tera Tremayne also had a great night offensively as she recorded 19 points on 7-17 shooting. She also contributed 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist in a team-high 46 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard Constance “C.C.” Rundles was the only other Aggie to score in double-digits. She posted 10 points on 4-8 shooting, 2 steals, an assist, and a team-high 7 rebounds in 26 minutes on the floor.
Cameron has one game left in the TWU Pioneer Premiere before they return home to Lawton. The Aggies take on the Western State College of Colorado (Gunnison, Colorado) Mountaineers tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:00pm.
“Everybody on our team made big plays down the stretch,” Coach Webb said. “Even our young players stepped up and hit big shots late. I’m very pleased with how tonight went.”
CU’s home opener does not come until Monday, December 8, when the team hosts Newman University at 6:00pm in the Aggie Gym.
