Aggie women lose OT battle
DENTON, Texas (November 16) – The Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (1-1, 0-0 LSC North) finished play at the Texas Woman’s Pioneer Premiere today with a 71-62 overtime loss to the Western State College (Gunnison, Colorado) Mountaineers (1-1, 0-0 RMAC). The Aggies went 1-1 in the season-opening tournament and played extremely competitive basketball against tough opponents.
“Our kids did a great job all weekend,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “They competed really hard all weekend and played a lot of basketball. They no doubt got a lot of experience from this weekend’s event.”
The two teams battled back and forth throughout the first half, with Cameron taking an 18-17 lead into halftime. CU and WSC kept the pressure on in the second half as each team held the lead 7 times in the period. The Aggies had a three-point lead with 6 seconds left, but the Mountaineers tied it with a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into an extra frame.
“Our girls logged a lot of minutes this weekend and I think we got better defensively because of it,” Coach Webb said. “Offensively we still have a long way to go.”
WSC began overtime on an 11-0 run putting the game just out of reach. The Aggies fought back but never got within less than 7 points of the lead. For the game, CU shot a solid 33.8% from the field while WSC shot a 39.3%. The Aggies were out-rebounded 49-43 but recorded more steals (14-10) and blocks (1-0) than the Mountaineers.
Senior guard Kristi Taylor kept up her high level of play and led the game with 19 points on 6-17 shooting. She also chipped in 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and a game-high 5 assists. Taylor saw action in 40 minutes tonight.
Due to her back-to-back impressive performances at this weekend’s two-day event, Taylor was one of five players named to the TWU Pioneer Premiere All-Tournament Team. She was CU’s lone representative.
Junior post Amber Schroer and junior guard Tera Tremayne both led the Aggies with 8 rebounds each against WSC. Schroer recorded 8 points on 3-3 shooting, 1 block, and 1 steal in 30 minutes, while Tremayne contributed 7 points on 3-14 shooting with 3 assists, and 2 steals in 34 minutes.
Sophomore guard Constance “C.C.” Rundles was Cameron’s only other player to record a double-digit point total as she posted 11 points on 5-11 shooting. She also recorded 5 rebounds in her 26 minutes of play.
Cameron next takes part in the Colorado State University-Pueblo Classic next weekend (November 21-22). The Aggies take on New Mexico Highlands at 2:00pm on Friday (November 21) and CSU-Pueblo at 6:00pm Saturday (November 22).
“Overall I’m definitely pleased with this weekend,” Coach Webb said. “We need to keep getting better everyday and keep fighting. We are excited with how we played; we played great.”
CU’s home opener is scheduled for Monday, December 8, against Newman University at 6:00pm in the Aggie Gym.
