Aggies end season in 2nd round

DURANT, Oklahoma (April 25) – Cameron’s softball team (32-22, 17-7 LSC North) saw it’s 2009 season come to an end today in their second game of the Lone Star Conference Championship tournament. A day after falling to the #5 Angelo State Rambelles 11-3, the Aggies lost to the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm by the score 6-3. Today’s game went into extra (nine) innings.

“This loss is especially tough because we were in the lead for so long and had so many chances to win it,” Head Coach Beth Watson said. “But our performance in the tournament doesn’t take anything away from the great season we had this year.”

Cameron led 2-1 after the first inning and extended their advantage to 3-1 after the fifth inning. A two-run top of the sixth tied the two teams, and CU nearly won it in the bottom of the seventh.

With two outs in the seventh and with senior first baseman Jenna Boren on second base, a fielding error by SOSU’s shortstop put Shareena Pulse on base. During the play, the throw to second base went into centerfield, allowing Boren to round third and head towards home. Unfortunately, Boren was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

“We had our chances late in the game, but couldn’t come through with the big hits,” Coach Watson said. “We had a pretty good performance today, but we are a better team.”

The game headed into extra innings, and in the top of the ninth the Savage Storm hit a three-run home run to take a 6-3 lead. CU had a chance in the bottom of the inning with two runners on, but could not come through.

CU scored 3 runs on 5 hits with an error, while SOSU put up 6 runs on 8 hits with 3 errors.

“Overall this was a great season and I’m very proud of the way our team played,” Coach Watson said. “We will really miss the five seniors on our team.”

The Aggie softball team now heads into the offseason training portion of their season. CU will begin their 2010 season next February.
