Cameron wins LSC regular season title

LAWTON, Oklahoma (April 25) – After getting the sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State (SWOSU) this weekend, the Cameron Aggie baseball won the Lone Star Conference regular season title. Once again the Aggies came through with a LSC series victory after beating SWOSU this weekend 4-0.

With the sweep, the Aggie baseball team has either won or tied every series they have played all year. The Aggies won the first two games in Weatherford on Friday by the scores of 27-5 and 18-12 and won both games today by the scores of 11-10 and 6-5.

The Aggie offense exploded in game one as the CU baseball team hit seven homeruns and broke the school record for most home runs hit in a single game.

The Black and Gold was lead by Senior Designated hitter Nate Arevalo as he hit three home runs. Alex Lyons was the other offensive leader as he hit for the cycle as CU went on to win the game 27-5.

The CU offense continued to be hot in game two as they jumped out to an early two to zero lead in the top of the first. Nate Arevalo continued his hot streak as he blasted two more home runs to put his season total to 18, which breaks the CU season record for most home runs hit in a single season.

Chris Caves became the second Aggies to hit for the cycle as he homered in the top of the seventh to get the cycle.

Senior Justin Kirkpatrick started the game on the mound for the Aggies and went five strong innings and recorded seven strikeouts.

James Maxwell came in and pitched the final four innings shutting down the Bulldogs to record his seventh save of the season as the Aggies went on to win 18-12.

Cameron had a little more motivation on Saturday. It was senior day at McCord Field as the team honored thirteen seniors before the game. The Aggies jumped out to a 11-4 lead, and it was looking like they were going to get an easy victory, but the Aggies gave up five runs in the top of the seventh and SWOSU tied the game up.

Senior Chase Elder led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and was moved over into scoring position by a sacrifice bunt by catcher Kyle Nyhart. Fellow senior Josh Barnett hit the game winning single to left field scoring Elder from second as Cameron went on to win 11-10.

“I’m really honored to have coached a group of players like these seniors”, Cameron Head Coach Todd Holland said. “They are a really good group of guys and they have meant a lot to the building of our program.”

Cameron went on to win the nightcap by a strong pitching performance by senior Jason Smith. Smith went 7.2 strong innings giving up three earned runs and recording six strikeouts.

James Maxwell pitched the final inning and recorded his eighth save to tie the school record. Also, Cameron recorded its 41st victory of the season in the 11-10 win.

Next Tuesday (April 28) the Aggies will host the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at 2:00pm in a single, seven-inning game at McCord Field. The CU-USAO game will close out the 2009 regular season.

CU’s match-up in next weekend’s Lone Star Conference Championship tournament has already been decided. Next Saturday (May 2) at 11:00am in Abilene, Texas, the #1-seeded Aggies will take on the #6-seeded Tarleton State Texans.
