SAN ANGELO, Texas (December 5) – Despite going toe to toe with the Rambelles in the second half, the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (3-4) could not come away with the road victory this afternoon. Angelo State (5-3) won today’s Lone Star Conference Crossover battle with CU, 74-52, dropping the Black and Gold one game below .500 on the season.
“We have to learn from this roadtrip,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “If we don’t get tougher as a team and learn from our mistakes, then we waste the last two games.”
Both teams scored 37 points in the second half, but the ‘Belles more than doubled the Aggies’ output in the first half creating an insurmountable lead. Angelo State has now won three in a row over Cameron.
“If we can understand what we need to work on and work to improve those aspects, then this was a good weekend,” Coach Webb said.
A hot start put ASU ahead early, and the ‘Belles never looked back. The Aggies stayed focused throughout but could never get back within single digits.
Today’s game featured a crazy 31 steals, with 17 going the way of the Black and Gold. ASU narrowly won the rebounding (38-34) and turnover (32-29) battles, and out-shot CU 42.9% to 29.8%.
Both teams finished the game with a pair of blocks and CU committed fewer personal fouls, 23-21.
The star of today’s game was Cameron junior guard Josie Stewart who played injured. The newcomer took an elbow to the face in Thursday night’s game versus Abilene Christian and was questionable to play today.
Stewart led both teams in points and rebounds this afternoon. She recorded 23 points on 7-14 shooting, including 3-6 from long range and 6-8 at the charity stripe, and 13 rebounds. Stewart was the only player on either team to score more than 14 points and grab more than 7 rebounds.
Junior guard Lyndie NeVille was the only other Aggie to score in double-digits as she finished with 14 points on 3-8 shooting, including 8-9 from the free throw line.
Freshman guard Alexis Williams swiped more balls than anyone in the game as she finished with 4 steals. Stewart, Amber Schroer, and Tera Tremayne all finished with 3 steals apiece.
“We need to get after it, and if we work hard there will be benefits,” Coach Webb said. “We need to have urgency, and as a whole we need to get better every single day. If we do that we’ll be alright.”
Cameron returns home next week for a two-game homestand of Lone Star Conference Crossover games. On Saturday (December 12) the Aggies host the Zias of Eastern New Mexico University at 2:00pm.
The following Monday (December 14), CU hosts the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs at 6:00pm in the Aggie Gym.
