CU suffers first loss of season, 60-59

SAN ANGELO, Texas (December 5) – With a brutal sixth game in nine days, the Aggies men’s basketball team (5-1) wrapped up the opening to their 2009-2010 season with a close 60-59 loss to the Angelo State Rams (5-2). CU led for most of the game but didn’t have enough to pull off a sixth consecutive victory to start the year.

“We played hard but we just ran out of gas. We couldn’t make our shots either, but overall we really didn’t play that bad,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. “”We had a chance to win; we just never could get over that hump. We probably could’ve gotten them but we didn’t have enough energy and it finally caught up with us.”

The Black and Gold won last year’s battle with the Rams by a mere 3 points, so this year’s loss allowed ASU a taste of revenge. The road defeat puts CU’s record away from the Aggie Gym at 2-1 on the season.

“It’s still pretty impressive that we had an opportunity to beat them even though we were so tired,” Coach Alexander said. “The season has been great so far, and anytime you go on the road you want to at least get a split. If at the end of a road game you have a chance to win it, that’s all you can ask for.”

Angelo State began the game with the lead and held on for most of the first half. A late 21-5 run put the Aggies on top and ahead 36-29 at halftime. A buzzer-beating three-pointer at the horn by ASU’s LaMarshall Corbett kept the Rams from being down 10 points at the break.

CU maintained the lead for much of the second frame, but ASU put together a number of small scoring runs to eventually tie the game for the sixth and final time.

The Rams’ Chris Ellis hit a three-pointer with 2:44 left to give ASU a three-point lead, which they held onto for exactly the next two minutes. With 44 seconds left CU’s Jamaar Burke put in a close lay-up to cut the lead to one.

Cameron immediately fouled to put Angelo State at the line in hopes of at least one miss. ASU’s Antwon Williams missed both free throws to give CU a shot at the victory, but the Aggies were unable to get a final shot off and lost the game by one.

The Aggies dominated the boards and won the rebounding battle 43-32. CU also shot 37.1% from the field with 8 turnovers and 4 steals, while ASU shot an even 40.0% with 7 turnovers and 2 steals. Both squads finished with a pair of blocks.

Cameron was called for 21 personal fouls, while Angelo State was whistled only 9 times.

Other than the close loss, the Aggie storyline of the night was the unbelievable 19 rebounds that senior forward Kallan Glasgow grabbed in the game. He finished with 10 offensive and 9 defensive rebounds, to finish with a season-high. His 12 points on 6-11 shooting gave him yet another career double-double.

Junior guard Dernodo Eiland finished with Cameron’s team-high in points with 15 on 6-14 shooting. Fellow junior guard Jacquez Williams was the only other Aggies in double-digits with 13 points on 6-11 from the field.

“Now we can define what kind of team we are,” Coach Alexander said. “You need to ask yourself if you’re going to get after it, bond as a team, and do what you need to do, or are you going to hang your head. I think we will really come out and play well next week.”

The Aggie men’s basketball team continues their tough schedule with a three-game homestand next week.

On Wednesday (December 9) the Aggies host Dallas Christian College at 7:00pm in the Aggie Gym. The following Saturday (December 12), CU hosts their first LSC Crossover home game of the year when they tip off with the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds at 4:00pm.

The next Monday (December 14), Cameron matches up with the West Texas A&M Buffs at 8:00pm in the Aggie Gym.
