Aggies win big, still perfect at home

LAWTON, Oklahoma (December 12) – Cameron’s men’s basketball team (7-1) made it look easy tonight against an under-matched Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds squad (4-4). With a 64-55 win this evening, the Aggies remain undefeated inside the friendly confines of the Aggie Gym. CU is 5-0 at home so far and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference Crossover play.

“We came out and played well enough to win,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. “That is sometimes tough to do against a fellow Lone Star Conference opponent.”

The Aggie men stole a road win from the Greyhounds last year 70-54, in Portales, New Mexico. Tonight’s win gives CU two in a row against ENMU.

The ‘Hounds hit the first basket of tonight’s ballgame and actually maintained a one-point lead for the first five minutes of the first half. The Aggies took control for the first time at the 14:48 mark in the first, and they never looked back.

CU outscored their opponents 32-18 in the first half, but a strong second frame by ENMU gave them the 37-32 second half win. A huge Greyhound surge late in the game brought the score very close, but CU never lost control. The Aggies stepped back on the gas to pull away with the 9-point victory.

“We’ve got some older guys that have played in big games, so they understand what is going on when you get in a situation like that late in the game,” Coach Alexander said. “That says a lot about our senior leadership.”

Like their female counterparts, the Aggie men controlled the boards down low. They won the rebounding battle 44-39, but were barely outshot by their foes 35.3%-34.4%. Both teams came away with 4 blocks, and CU swiped more steals 6-4.

The Aggies also were whistled more than the Greyhounds, finishing with 24 personal fouls to ENMU’s 23.

Sophomore guard Milton Garner once again came off the bench to have a huge game. His points-rebounds double-double contributed to CU’s win in a big way. He finished with 13 points on 5-13 shooting with a game-high 12 rebounds in 33 minutes.

Junior guard Jacquez Williams led the Black and Gold offensively tonight with a team-high 17 points on 5-11 shooting. Williams’ 5-11 shooting was all from behind the three-point arc, and he went 2-2 from the charity stripe. He also recorded a team-high 3 assists in 27 minutes.

Dernodo Eiland, another of CU’s junior guards, was the only other Aggie to finish with double-digit scoring numbers. He recorded 13 points on 3-10 shooting with 5 rebounds and an assist in 27 minutes.

Forwards Kallan Glasgow (senior) and Nathan Murray (junior) finished with 8 and 7 rebounds, respectively, to give the Aggies the advantage under the boards.

Cameron ends their current three-game homestand this Monday (December 14) at 8:00pm in the Aggie Gym. On Monday evening the Aggies play host to the West Texas A&M Buffaloes in another LSC Crossover matchup.

“Our record looks great but we still have to play better,” Coach Alexander said. “We aren’t playing very well, so we need to play a lot better on Monday. We have a great West Texas team coming in and we’ll need to get ready to defend, rebound, and take care of ball all over again.”

The Aggies lost to the Buffs last year on the road, 70-55, in Canyon, Texas.
