Aggies can’t wrangle ‘Stangs, 59-46

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (December 19) – This year’s installment of the Red River Rumble went the way of the Midwestern State Mustangs (3-6), who tonight knocked off the Cameron Aggie women’s basketball team (3-7). CU fell by the score 59-46 in MSU’s D.L. Ligon Coliseum in another Lone Star Conference Crossover match-up.

“We talked about urgency before the game and we definitely made progress in that area,” Head Coach Tom Webb said. “But at the same time, it’s too bad it took us a whole half to get to that level of urgency.”

Tonight’s loss is CU’s third in a row, and the fourth consecutive victory over the Black and Gold for MSU.

“You can’t turn it over 26 times, get out-rebounded, shoot poorly, and expect to win basketball games,” Coach Webb said. “They took 16 mores shots than us and we gave up a ton of offensive rebounds as well. Those stats crushed us. We defended well tonight; we just didn’t finish a possession.”

The ‘Stangs began tonight’s game with the lead, but the Aggies fought back and were eventually out in front by 3 points. Cameron was only able to hold onto their advantage for 4 minutes before Midwestern State regained the lead.

MSU led for the rest of the game, although CU fought back from a 21-point deficit. The score at halftime had the ‘Stangs up 27-18, and the Aggies almost won the second half, 32-28.

It was a great battle down low tonight as both teams finished with more than 40 rebounds. Although the boards went the way of MSU, 46-42, the Aggies finished with more defensive rebounds, 26-23.

Both teams finished with 3 blocks and similar shooting numbers, with MSU taking the 32.4%-30.8% shooting advantage. Midwestern State went 22-68 from the field, while Cameron went 16-52. Both teams struggled from long range with CU going 2-13 (15.4%) and MSU going 2-17 (11.8%).

Cameron stays on the road to complete this weekend’s Lone Star Conference Crossover swing through Texas with a road game at Tarleton State on Monday (December 21) at 6:00pm in Stephenville.

“Tarleton State is a really good team,” Coach Webb said. “They are aggressive, strong, and physical, and they are very, very good. If we don’t have urgency right from the tip it will be an interesting game.”
