CU defense pulls upset over TAMUK

LAWTON, Oklahoma (January 7) – A perfect 8-0 is where the Cameron Aggie men’s basketball team (10-4) pushed their home record to tonight with a big 59-48 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville (10-4). The victory puts Cameron’s record against the South Division of Lone Star Conference Crossover play to 4-3 on the year.

“Tonight was a good win for us,” Head Coach Wade Alexander said. "We played well and we executed well. I think the guys are finally listening to what we’ve been preaching all season. I’m pleased we got this win.”

Once again CU’s tenacious defense played a major role in the home victory. The Aggies made it tough for the Javelinas to get a good look at the basket, as TAMUK went 18-53 (34.0%) from the field. In return the Black and Gold went 18-46 (39.1%).

“We shot a lot better tonight, and the low scores are more of a product of us shortening the game with our defense,” Coach Alexander said. “We want to defend well and keep the other team as low as possible. We could have run the ball tonight but we were short handed. We wanted to stay under control.”

Cameron out-rebounded their opponents 39-33 and recorded the only 3 blocks of the game. Texas A&M-Kingsville recorded more steals (8-2) and fewer turnovers (10-11), but the Aggies took far less trips to the foul line, 22-13.

Jacquez Williams led CU in scoring with 16 points on 5-9 shooting and 1-4 from the foul line. All five of Williams’ shots from the field came from three-point range.

Greg Morgan and Nathan Murray were the only other Aggies to score in double-digits with 11 points each.

“We have a winning record against the LSC South and that doesn’t happen very often,” Coach Alexander said. “If we can do that against the LSC North then we will be okay for the conference tournament.”

On a side note, Coach Alexander took the court against a former boss in TAMUK head coach Pete Peterson this evening.

CU is off this weekend but opens up LSC North Division play next Wednesday (January 13) at 8:00pm in the Aggie Gym against Northeastern State University.
